The Groove

For those of you who fancy yourself writers --
Don't be too hard on yourself about when you write.  It takes finding your groove (have you read When Stella Got Her Groove Back?)  When I'm not writing I get grumpy. I need to be writing or editing a project regularly for my Muse to be satisfied.  I'm writing the fifth book in my sci fi series and am about 25,000 words in. I broke off to finish the edit on the romance I've had in the drawer for a number of years. I have a contemporary mystery started, which is about 11,000 words. I have more than one project going at a time. When I get stuck I go to another project.  Some days I sit down at my computer and have no idea what will happen but I just tell myself, "Write!" and I don't worry if it is good or not. All my books require a certain amount of research so that factors in but doesn't count as writing.  For me creative writing counts as writing.  I don't outline. My brain doesn't work that way. I just write and depend on the characters to carry the story.

Remembering Sophie

Sophie was one of the best. She went to cat heaven today and it always is a hard decision for me to help them on their way. She was declining in health, could eat and drink but nothing stayed in her. She was losing weight and felt like a bag of bones. She was perky to the end, but I could tell she wasn't feeling great. These photos were from a cold winter afternoon when we were cuddling on the recliner or sleepy chair as John and I call it. It has been a long, extremely cold, snowy winter and Sophie spent almost all the time inside. She was a rescue from our home in Bluemont Virginia. Actually, she adopted us. She was very feisty and bossed our two younger, bigger cats around. She didn't take no guff. She raced around the yard and climbed the trees, stalked and caught mice, rabbits, and sage rats. Had a wonderful cat life here.  Did as she pleased. Got good food up until the last. She rode out to Oregon with us from Virginia in a 26 foot Budget rental truck and slept on the dashboard most of the time, refusing to stay in the cat carrier. I can already feel her haunting the place, in a good way. This was her home for most of her life and I'm glad she shared it with us. Dear, beloved Sophie.  Rest in peace.

Hillary Doesn't Insult Me

I sent this Letter to the Editor of the Burns Times Herald and it was published Wednesday, August 10:

I don't usually write letters to the editor, but the cartoon you published in last week's paper compelled me to speak up. It showed a caricature of Hillary Clinton that read "Insults Our Intelligence".  I want it to be known that she doesn't insult my intelligence.  As an intelligent, well-educated, and well-read woman, I find her amazing, I admire her, and I support her bid as the first woman President of the United States of America.  I have long admired her, but in 2003 when I read her book, Living History (which is in the Harney County Library), I became a devoted supporter even sending money to her campaign for senator in New York, and I didn't live in New York.  I find her work as a public servant inspiring. I find her grit, determination, and forthrightness to be applauded.  There is a whole generation of women who look up to her for guidance and inspiration. Without women like her, women today would not enjoy the hard won rights they have. I realize that not everyone shares my opinion of her. In polling numbers from the New York Times in July, she polls worst with white males with no college degree.  This demographic group is not the majority they used to be. They now seem to feel threatened. Powerful women threaten certain types of men. Maybe these white males are coming to understand the discrimination that women, African Americans, Native Americans, the LGBTQ community, Hispanics, Asian Americans, and other minority groups have suffered for hundreds of years in this country.  I appeal to disaffected voters to look again at what Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Party stand for. The platform is on her web site: HillaryClinton.com/issues. Learn who she is and what she wants for this country instead of listening to media pundits. Hillary Clinton has all the qualifications it takes to step into the White House on day one and lead us for the next four years. I trust her with my life, and I trust her to lead this country.  Deal me in!
